rest in peace...

a co-worker passed away this week. she was a single mom of 5. she was nice, quiet and kind. it is such a shock! we have rallied the last 2 weeks in raising money for her family. we held a bake sale at sam's club and raised almost $1300!! we will miss you colleen...

Colleen Barton (1965 - 2011)

Colleen Barton, age 45, of Logan, Utah, died Jan. 25, 2011, at the University of Utah Medical Center from complications related to acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia.
Colleen was born Dec. 14, 1965, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the fifth child of Clark and Cherrill Barton. She had a happy childhood in Bountiful, Utah. Colleen was always very active in church and was especially fond of Girl's Camp and other youth outings. Colleen moved during her high school years when her father's duties with the U.S. Air Force initiated a move to Avon Park, Fla.; then Holbrook, Ariz. Colleen is a graduate of Holbrook High School. She always enjoyed music, singing with numerous musical groups. Being a member of the Holbrook High School Flag Team was a highlight of her earlier years.
Colleen attended Weber State College in Ogden, Utah, and Utah State University in Logan, where she met her future husband Kelly Dale Kemp. They were married in 1986 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They had five children, Nathan, Kyle, Allison, Gary and Mellissa. They lived in Kearns, Utah, and Logan, Utah; they later divorced and Colleen continued to raise her family in Logan.
Colleen was a deeply spiritual person who cherished and served her Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ. Her children were her life and she worked tirelessly to teach them honesty, love for others, faith in God and devotion to family. Her loving example and teaching has made her children unbelievably strong, resilient and united.
While living in Logan she was a very active member of the LDS Church, extremely involved with school and music for her children. She received and gave much support through her affiliation with Heart to Heart. She was a devoted friend, always willing to lend a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. She was universally loved because of her ability to accept and understand others without judgment. It is doubtful Colleen realized the extent of her enormous influence in the lives of her children, family and friends.
Colleen is survived by her children, Nathaniel Merrill Kemp (23), Kyle Riddell Kemp (21), Allison Kay Kemp (19), Gary Allen Kemp (16), Mellissa Rose Kemp (13); her parents, Clark Laws Barton, Cherrill Kay Barton (Oyler); her siblings, Jeffrey Clark Barton, Laurie Kay Anderson (Barton), Alan Glen Barton, Julian Dale Barton; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, family and friends too varied and numerous to mention.
The outpouring of love and support to Colleen, her children and family have been truly humbling and oh so appreciated. Colleen is with her Father in Heaven and knows without a shadow of a doubt that she was loved by all.
Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Logan 6th Ward Chapel located at 94 W. 600 South in Logan, Utah. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m., Funeral service at 11 a.m. The graveside service and burial will take place at 3 p.m. at the Lakeview Cemetery, 1640 E. Lakeview Drive, Bountiful, Utah, 84010. in memory...

i am a huge voicemale fan! they are an amazing a cappella musical group of 6 fabulous and talented men. last week one of those wonderful men, Phil Kesler, passed away.
On Thursday, February 11, 2010 Phillip Andrew Kesler passed peacefully from this life into the next. His wife, Heidi, and daughter, Eden were home with him at the time of his passing. He had fought metastatic colorectal cancer for the past three years. During that time, he continued to serve his church and to teach graphic design at Jacksonville State University. He held degrees (BA, MFA) in art from Utah State University and has been an Assistant Professor at JSU since fall 2005. He loved design, typography, and especially his students and colleagues.
Phil was also a member of Voice Male, an award-winning contemporary a cappella group based in Utah. He loved music (both vocal and piano) and poetry.
Phil was born in Midvale, UT on July 23, 1968. He served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taiwan. In addition to his wife and daughter, Phil is survived by his parents Claudia and Orson Kesler of Alpine, UT; and brothers: Matt (Tauna) of Liberty, MO; Dan of Taylorsville, UT; Ken of Thousand Oaks, CA; Aaron of Alpine, UT; and Steve (Morgann) of Salt Lake City, UT.

wow...

i know! it has been a really long time since i have done just a good old fashioned post! here you go... ;) random thoughts mixed with a few events!

my birthday was great! we made my all time favorite dessert: chocolate delight!

it was amazing... as usual! the bad part was that i had to share with my mom... cuz she loves it too! usually i get most of it to myself! ha!

my good friend jeff went to hawaii with his sister in october too! what fun for them! here is one of the many pics he sent me while he was there!

i would have never guessed he was a tourist! lol!

nice shirt and shoes there buddy. :) looking good!!

my best friend's brother and his family also came out to visit! it was sooooo much fun to see them!

he has 3 girls and they have all grown up so fast! and are so beautiful!

this picture is: kevin, his wife robin, and their oldest daughter kenzie.

and another visitor too!!! my mom's cousin and his wife came to visit too! what a fun month of friends and family visits!!

ian and sara were on their way to california for the month of november and stopped here! we were so lucky to see them!

such a fun weekend!

in other news and events...

my mom flew out to indiana this morning to spend thanksgiving with my uncle steve and aunt paula! when they were her visiting last month they invited her to come out! i am very excited for her! she hasn't been back "home" to indiana since 1991! she is going to have such a fun visit! and i am a tad jealous! i love indiana and visiting my fabulous family out there! all 3 of my cousins still live in the area and i would love to see them too!

yesterday we had an early celebration of thanksgiving with our friends since mom will be gone for thanksgiving! it was so fun! we ate and laughed and play games all day! i am so blessed to have them in my life!

i am feeling a little bit overwhelmed with all of the projects i have going on! i am in the middle of making my christmas cards! they are very cute... but more time consuming than i realized they would be!

i have started 3 t-shirt quilts! one of them is from all of my creating keepsake shirts i wore when i travelled with them. another is just random shirts of mine over the years and the last one is random shirts of kevins! geez! i really need to get these done so i can have my living room back!!

and my last project i have is my christmas gifts for my family and friends. a couple of weeks ago we had a craft night at church and i bought a ton of this particular craft to make. well... i went a little over board! ha! they are really cute and fairly simple, i just need to find the time to do them!

i am also hosting bunco in december! i am excited and nervous! excited because i love bunco and i do think its fun to shop and plan a party! plus in december we usually go potluck, so the only thing i have to cook is the ham!! easy! but i am nervous because i am not sure where i am going to put everyone! i will have my christmas tree up and i have too much furniture in my living room! so there might be some major remodeling during the christmas season to accommodate my tree! ha!

well... i better go work on those christmas cards... :) have a good day!

more time for escape...

so i have decided to that i have so much to tell about my escape to arizona last week, that it might me easier to share it in chronilogical order...

so... i will start with our wednesday morning flight...

i LOVE the carpet in the phoenix airport! it has planes on it! i have traveled alot ... and trust me, it is the coolest out there! :)

we stayed at the sheritan wild horse pass resort. beautiful. huge. spread out. they don't believe in building up... they went out! the hallways zig zagged out... and we, of course, were on the the 4th zig... the last zig i might add!

we had a very pretty view... but since it was 114 degrees outside... we didn't go out on the terrace very often!

the beds were very comfy! kris and i both had to bounce a bit to be sure... :)

we checked into the resort about 8:30 am, rested a bit in the room
and then we were off to explore! we had an early lunch out by the pool under the misters! the food was good, but very hot! not only does the weather have some heat, so does the food! :)

we had some fun guests with us at lunch... birds! when the table next to us was cleared the birds started "helping" by taking the leftover food and sugar packets! it was quite funny!
i will post more later... can't wait to tell you about our bus tour of the bazzill factory!! :)

it's a safari!!

Creative Escape had a safari theme this year!

using zebra stripes, pink and green and the main colors! it was very cool to see everyone all decked out with zebra stripes!

one of the activities we could do was do a safari scavenger hunt! we were given clues to help us find 6 palm trees around the resort! at each tree there was an animal stamp to stamp our "passports" and a prop to take a picture with!

so much fun! but... i have to say... most of these cute palm trees were outside and it was 114 degrees!!! very hot! good thing i wanted to win the raffle! ha! :)

~ sometimes the hardest thing is to know which bridge to cross and which to burn. you may just want to cross this one. rocks dont burn, you would quickly learn.

~ it is said a strong woman and a waterfall always channel their own way. don't mess up this waterfall or the landscapers would have something to say...

~ you can always say you have been there, done that, and got t-shirts. but the memories at Creative Escape you'll always LOVE so much it Hertz.

~ when a mind and heart are on FIRE, creativity flows through your hand. in a summer in AZ, next to a fire pit, you don't really want to stand!!

~ let your hook be always cast. in the pool where you least expect it, will be fish. in this pool there aren't any fish, but you can jump in and cool off if you wish.

~ do you ever wonder what it would be like to escape to a deserted island? well, on this escape, there is an island you have to find, but expect sand.

hee hee! fun... but didn't win the raffle!

B- Best Friend Birthday!
this month was the birthday of my very best friend in the whole wide world which means that we have been friends for over 28 years!
one of our first memories of each other was on her 8th birthday... i had gone to indiana to visit my family for summer vacation and i brought her back a little glass duck from the children's museum. i knew her favorite color was yellow... and ducks are yellow! pretty smart for an 8 year old, huh? :)
we have been best friends ever since!
i love ya, bubba! thanks for an amazing 28 years!
i can't wait for the next 28 too! :)

wow...

Elwood, Utah – Jami Margaret Petersen, 26, passed away Monday, June 15, 2009 at her home.
She was born July 6, 1982 in Logan, UT to Russell William and Sharon Effie Laws Petersen. She graduated from Bear River High School 2000 and attended Weber State and Utah State Universities. She worked as a Pharmacy Technician and was studying Bio-Medical Engineering.
Jami enjoyed working with stained glass, cross stitching, entertaining kids and was a very talented flute musician. She was a member of the Tremonton Ninth LDS Ward and served as a Nursery and Primary Teacher.
Jami is survived by her parents, one sister, Julie Ann and one brother, Jeffrey Russell.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 20, 2009 11:00 a.m. at Tremonton South Stake Center, 1150 South Tremont St., Tremonton with Bishop C. Blake Christensen officiating. Family and friends may call Friday, June 19, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Rogers and Taylor Funeral Home, 111 North 100 East, Tremonton and Saturday from 9:15-10:40 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at the Elwood Town Cemetery.
The family wishes to express thanks to friends, neighbors, the medical and support staff that cared for Jami.
this has been a super hard week for me.
the passing of jami has really hit me with all kinds of emotions.
relief- that her suffering is finally over.
sadness- that i won't be able to hear her funny jokes or hear her laughter.
joy- that she is in God's presence and whole again.
heartbreak- for her brother, jeff, and family. i have become quite close to jeff and i worry for him. i also have become good friends with his family and they are very dear to me as well.
gratitude- for the opportunity i had to know jami. and the many lessons i have learned from her.
love- for jami. for jeff. for friends and family.
i am an emotional person anyway...
and then a week like this happens and i feel like i am always on the verge of tears.
i am grateful for jami for being my friend. for teaching me the importance of love, family and friends. i am grateful for the knowledge i have that families are forever, that there is life after this and that i will see jami again someday. we will laugh and walk and talk as we once did.
until then... i will miss her.

Angie: i met angie through her husband when he worked at sam's club. angie and i became fast friends! i had the wonderful opportunity to help her out after the birth of her first child. i would watch him while she ran errands, did chores around the house or just took a nap! when she was done we would just sit and chat! i loved having to chance to get to know her better! she is going to have baby #3 in a couple of months! time sure flies! she is a great mom and a very motivated person!

Chelsa: i love this girl! we met and worked together at Coppin's Hallmark almost 9 years ago! we hit it off right away! chelsa is funny and kind. she has always taken the time to get to know me... and made me feel special. she was there during my "courtship" to my husband! she witnessed it all! we don't see each other very often, and i miss her!

Noelani: i met noe while working at Coach House Gifts many, many years ago! she is a great mom, and one of the most talented women i have ever met in my entire life. she is so creative and smart! noe is also one of the kind and considerate women. she is always looking for a way to help... she, too, lives out of state and i miss interacting with her on a regular basis. she inspires me to be a better person! she is wonderful and i am honored to be her friend!

Nicky: i don't even know where to start with nicky! she is fun and loving and kind! she and i became friends at one job and then we both moved together to another job. nicky is creative and a very smart thinker. she loves to have fun and isn't afraid to be silly. she makes me feel comfortable and myself, just by being around her. i have the pleasure of seeing her every month at bunco! i love it!

all 5 of these women have touched my life in a way that has forever changed me. i am very grateful for each of them and the differences of them all! thanks gals! i sure love you!

Sweet and Sour Chicken Sauce:
Sauce:
1 TB Red Wine Vinegar
1 1/2 C. Sugar (I used half that)
1/2 C. Pineapple Juice
6 TB Ketchup
2 TB Soy Sauce
1 tsp Salt 2 tsp Accent
Chicken
Corn Starch
Egg
Dip chicken breasts in beaten egg, then shake in cornstarch enough to coat. Brown in hot oil, sprinkle with garlic powder and place in casserole pan. Make sauce and pour over chicken.
Sauce: Combine ingredients in sauce pan. Bring to boil, stirring 1 min. Remove from heat. Pour over chicken and bake at 350 for 30-45 min.
I just grilled mine and cut it into strips, then poured the sauce over the top, then baked until it was warm all of the way through or until the rice was done. I also included the pineapple chunks that I had gotten the juice from.

A Joyful Life: My Mother, Sally Carlsen

I am so excited for the opportunity to share with you a peek into my mothers’ joyful life! First of all, the day of this Time Out for Women (September 13th) will by my moms’ 60th birthday! J It is the first time that either one of us has attended this type of event, and we are thrilled!

Sally Carlsen has a life grounded in the gospel of Jesus Christ and she faces every day and every trial with a song in her heart. My mom has not had an easy life. She has end
ured many struggles along her way. With the Lords help, she has found peace and strength with each obstacle. Through prayer and music, my mom has found joy- true joy- even during the rough times.

Mom joined the Church when she was 30 years old, with one small child and another on the way. As a single parent she learned quickly that she needed the loving guidance of our Heavenly Father in order to survive, let alone find joy! J As she sang to us each night before bed, we felt the peace and power of her happy life.

Families are a funny thing! They can bring such great happiness or sorrow and heartache. My sweet brother has made some choices that have caused a few heartaches. My mom is amazing! She handles it all with such faith and strength. She reminds me to rely on the Lord and give that heartache she is feeling to Him. The Atonement is her guiding strength through those hard days. She believes in its power to give her the courage to go forward and find the rainbows after the storms. She has learned to delight in the good days and in the little things.

Recently Mom broke her foot and then lost her job shortly thereafter. She could have totally fallen apart, because she is the soul provider in her home. Not my mom! She found the silver lining and decided this was a blessing in disguise! She felt that a door had opened to a new “work from home” job opportunity!

My Mother, Sally Carlsen, is my hero! She lives a joyful life through every trial and triumph, smile and tear! She is an amazing example of living a Christ centered life, each and every day!

i sure love her! and am very proud to be her daughter! happy late birthday mom!
* one of the things i love about the fall is the new seasons and shows on tv! wahoo! some of the ones i am looking forward to are: survivor, biggest loser, ghost whisperer and moonlight!
sorry this was so long! i will try to be better about posting more often so you little bums don't get so tired of reading my mammoth posts! lol!

happy fall y'all!
